SWEET FOODS MATCH WITH SWEET WINES

If you drink a dry red, for example, with a dessert, the flavour combination is too extremely opposite and can make the sweetness fade away and/or the wine can taste bitter. Matching with a sweet wine, this complements the flavour and enhances your enjoyment of the course and to be honest, can even make the sweet wine taste better. This is hard though, as there are some spectacular sweet wines to choose from whose flavours are heavenly!

A lot of people don’t like, or can’t drink, sweet wine alone and this therefore proves the case that food and wine matching is of mutual satisfaction to both parties; the sweet wine and the sweet food taste better and match perfectly!

If you’ve never fancied or tried sweet or fortified wines, please do so! First time though, do try with a dessert to experience this explosion and complement of flavours as it makes a big difference! I have finally been converted! This truly is a matter of wine perfectly matching a food.

A few examples of sweet wines include late-harvest wines e.g. German Eiswein; Noble Rot wines such as Barsac and Sauternes e.g. Chateau d’Yquem; Sherry, Port(best with chocolate), Muscat-based wines, Hungarian Tokaji, certain Riesling and Gewurztraminer wines.
