Riesling
(rees-ling)
Mainly grown in Germany and in Alsace, France. It is grown all over the world though these days and it’s flavours vary enormously depending on which country or region it is grown (very terroir- sensitive!). Australia has adopted this variety in recent years and is producing some very fine, lime flavoured examples. |
German and French Rieslings are very floral in aroma and minerally to taste, whereas Australian Rieslings are lime flavoured and higher in alcohol (usually Riesling is a lower alcohol grape). Aged Rieslings even have hints of Petrol in them?! |
Greenish yellow when young and can develop from golden to amber colour when aged. |
A wide variety of differently priced Riesling wines are available, so it’s a matter of trial and error to find one that suits your palate and budget. They can differ even from each producer/vineyard to the next, within the same region! There are some top class examples as well as some surprising bargains as this is not a hugely consumed variety. It is steadily becoming much more popular. |

Very food friendly with it’s delicate and aromatic presence- great with Asian and seafood dishes. |
